Saturday. Sept 19, 2009   - LIZ LONGLEY.
Suggested donation - $15

Liz Longley recently released her latest collection of songs, "Somewhere in the Middle", featuring songs that have won her recognition as one of the finest talents writing songs today.  She will graduate from Berklee College of Music in 2010 having been awarded their highest honor for songwriting, the Scott Benson Scholarship.  Her song "Rush" was chosen as the No. 1 song in Berklee's 2009 Songwriting Competition, and "Whatever Goes Up" was the No. 2 song in the contest a year ago.  Additionally, Liz was selected by Berklee College of Music to represent the school at the annual Kennedy Center Conservatory Project in Washington, DC.

Her prowess in music is not strictly academic. Recent songs won Liz recognition in a trifecta of songwriting competitions in the folk scene for 2009: New Folk finalist at the Kerrville Folk Festival, Emerging Artist at Falcon Ridge Folk Festival, and Grand Prize Winner of the Rocky Mountain Folk Festival's Songwriter Showcase. Don't be fooled by the charming smile, youthful good looks and blond hair, Liz Longley is a powerhouse songwriter with all the tools that make her the "find" of the folk scene for 2009.

'The Telegraph' of New Hampshire says, "Longley's songs swell with honesty and genuine emotion that most of us are unable to admit to but recognize all the same."  Pop icon John Mayer broke into an impromptu rendition of Liz's song 'Queen' during a visit to Berklee and has described her music as "gorgeous". The Washington Post agrees and adds, "This voice won't stay small long… singer-songwriter Liz Longley seems destined for a bigger audience."

Liz is often accompanied by guitar talent Sarah Zimmermann. The two team-up for engaging vocal harmonies and a rapport with audiences that is filling venues throughout the region. In addition to regularly sharing the stage with Livingston Taylor, Liz has opened for acclaimed acts such as Colin Hay, Nanci Griffith, Kenny Rankin and Jonathan Edwards.

Saturday. December 5, 2009   -JAMES MADDOCK
Suggested donation - $15

When Columbia Records released Songs from Stamford Hill in 2000 it looked like James Maddock was destined for stardom. All the benchmarks of burgeoning success were there; a top 5 Triple A radio song, prominent placements in TV/Film, inclusion on the first Dawson's Creek compilation, and extensive touring with the likes of Paula Cole and Train. Although James created a small base of rabid fans, he didn't achieve the wide recognition he deserved. One of the burning questions in the music business over the last few years has been, "Whatever happened to James Maddock and Wood and why didn't he ever make another record"?

The story of James Maddock over the last 10 years has been one of pain and persistence. The brass ring was within his grasp. He relocated to the U.S., got married, and made another record for Columbia. And then it all fell apart. His personal and professional life unraveled at a rapid pace. He found himself in a new country, divorced, and to add to the insult, Columbia decided to not release the follow-up to Songs from Stamford Hill. James was unceremoniously dropped from the label. A lesser man would have been broken by the experience, but James rallied on amid the ruins.

What James now has to show for the detour from major label to the present, is an extraordinary set of songs embodied in his new album Sunrise on Avenue C. In the age of the track, James has made a real album with a beginning and an end. Vin Scelsa of WFUV and Sirius/XM puts it this way; "I fell head over heels in love with James Maddock's music around the turn of the century when his band Wood released Songs From Stamford Hill. My heart broke when James seemed to disappear completely from the music scene without a follow-up. From time to time I would search for him on the Internet, to no avail, and play the songs from Wood's only album with a bittersweet ache that matched the mood of the music. Imagine then how thrilled I was to discover at the end of the decade James was living and working right under my nose in New York City, far below the radar, honing his skills, biding his time. Then understand how exhilarated and thoroughly gladdened I became upon hearing his new songs, heartbreakingly beautiful, exquisitely crafted, which pick right up where Stamford Hill left off. James Maddock's talent has a timeless quality he shares with the great songwriters. His music touches the soul. How happy I am to have him back on the radar screen ... the world at large needs artists like this."

The burning question has been answered and it's called Sunrise on Avenue C now available on Ascend Records.

Saturday,  April 24, 2010, 8pm.  JIM BOGGIA
Suggested donation: $20

…this guy can write a hell of a song,
both with his pen and his guitar."
-PopMatters-

"'Where,' you ask, 'have all the good old singer-songwriters gone?' Fear not, disheartened lover of old LPs.  Philly's Boggia evokes songsmiths from Stevens to Taylor, modernizing them gracefully with the L.A. baroque-pop stylings of Penn, Mann, and Brion."
-Download.com-

Multi-instrumentalist/popsmith Jim Boggia is the kind of hyper-kinetic guy who may never need an iPod because he's already got instant recall of practically every song he's ever heard and loved.  Like a digital player permanently set in shuffle mode, he accesses riffs and rhymes with a sort of free-associative glee.

Jim's unabashed love for pop music of all sorts - the cool, the classic, the corny - informs his own meticulously constructed, immediately engaging songs. But he's more than just a facile craftsman; his songs are deeper, sometimes darker and more seriously romantic than his pop-trivia playfulness might suggest.  Once you've finished admiring his vintage-sounding arrangements, you can start appreciating the very contemporary emotions he's describing.

Boggia has gained impressive career momentum in a short amount of time. Blackberry selected his track "Live the Proof" for a new television commercial and his songs have also been featured on MTV's Real World and ABC-TV's Men In Trees. He's developed a loyal grass-roots fan base for his dynamic, improvisational live shows. His work has been embraced by numerous fellow artists and kindred spirits, many of who have lent their talents to Boggia's albums.

His acclaimed sophomore release, Safe In Sound, featured key contributions from such notable admirers as Aimee Mann, Jill Sobule, MC5 guitar hero Wayne Kramer, Attractions drummer Pete Thomas and legendary '70s cult-pop icon Emitt Rhodes. His latest CD, Misadventures In Stereo, was mastered at London's Abbey Road studios features a collaboration with Tony Asher, legendary lyricist of the Beach Boys landmark Pet Sounds.
